Christina Welzer
Korean-American artist Christina Welzer’s work serves as a visible expression of internal conflicts and suppressed emotions. With her delicately crafted pieces, Welzer unveils the hidden narratives of rage, fear, and resilience that often lie beneath a serene surface. Welzer’s meticulously crafted neon sculptures, unveil the tension between what is felt but not seen. Each work is adorned with symbolic representations of inner demons, and invites viewers to confront the dichotomy between outward composure and inner turmoil. In her sculptural work, she has created a series of neons depicting human faces interlaced with demonic entities. The imagery is lasercut into mirror and mounted on a neon backer. When the light is off, the linework is barely perceptible, and the picture rests in the material like a secret. When the neon is turned on, light bursts through the engraving, and the hard lines of the imagery are suddenly all too visible.
